South Africa has many socio-economic challenges which greatly impact the youth of the country. Access to reliable electricity has been a challenge for both urban and rural areas.
No electricity means no access to an education that meets modern standards. That’s the reality for millions of school children in remote communities and developing areas of the world. These children walk a long distance which takes them many hours to get to school and back and by the time they reach their home, it is late afternoon, early evening. Lack of access to electricity places them at risk of not completing school or getting poor grades because they cannot complete their homework or study at night. This means they are less likely to graduate because of poor performance and less likely to get jobs that can make their lives better and help pull their families out of poverty.
We believe education and technology are key enablers to a better society, a better country, a better world and a better future. The solar backpacks will help enable young people to reach their potential and lead better lives - it will not only assist with homework and studying after hours, but it’s also installed with a USB charging port to charge electronics such as smartphones and tablets. The long distance they walk to school and back creates an opportunity for children to charge their solar backpack which will provide the entire household with a reliable and sustainable source of light.
